Towards Humanist School Sustainability

Phase 2 of the Uganda Humanist Schools 2028 Sustainability Appeal is underway. Our aim is to raise £35,000 to help to ensure that the Humanist schools that we support in Uganda have the essential infrastructure that we would expect of a good school. Further information about the Appeal and how to donate can be found here:

Katumba Parents Humanist Primary School

Juma Siriwayo

Katumba Parents’ Humanist Primary School urgently requires classroom repairs, refurbishment, and additional rainwater-harvesting systems to create safer and healthier learning conditions for our pupils. Many of our classrooms have suffered from climate-change-induced storm damage, resulting in leaking roofs and material damage to the fabric of the buildings. Repairing and refurbishing these spaces will ensure that children learn without distraction in dry and safe rooms.

Investing in additional rainwater-harvesting capacity is also essential. Our school often faces water shortages, which disrupt essential daily activities such as handwashing, cooking, cleaning and maintaining proper sanitation. Expanding our rainwater-collection systems will provide a reliable, sustainable supply of clean water throughout the year. This will reduce the time that students and staff spend collecting water from distant sources and promote better hygiene, which in turn decreases the spread of water-borne illnesses.

Kasese Humanist Municipal High School

Providing more dormitory beds, classroom furniture, computers, projectors, and printers at Kasese Municipal High Humanist School will significantly improve the learning environment, student welfare, and overall school performance. Dormitory beds offer safety. They reduce long travel distances and give students more time for study and rest. Adequate classroom furniture ensures comfort, better concentration and a learning space that is conducive to learning.

Computers equip students with essential digital literacy skills while enabling teachers to prepare lessons efficiently and access global learning resources. Projectors modernise teaching by making lessons visual, interactive, and easier to understand, especially for large classes. Printers support administrative efficiency by enabling quick production of exams, records, and teaching materials, while also helping students print assignments and carry out research.

Kanungu Humanist Primary School

Robert Magara

Thanks to help from UHST supporters Kanungu Primary School has most of the essential facilities we need to operate an effective school. Our main challenge has come from the recent ferocity of storms. Torrential rain and winds have battered roofs and eroded the external fabric of walls and walkways. Urgent repairs have become necessary to rainproof and restore school buildings to ensure a safe, functional, and conducive learning environment. Earth walkways have become potholed and slippery. Repairs have become necessary for the safety of children, staff and visitors.

We are also seeking funds to enable us to construct a secure storeroom with robust shelving. This will provide a safe place to store and display books, so that they can be easily accessed by staff and children.

Isaac Newton Humanist Primary School was set up at the request of the community, and with help from UHST supporters, in the empty buildings of a former Evangelical School, which became insolvent during Covid. Unfortunately, just over 2 years ago, the District Surveyor found most of the buildings to be structurally unsound and gave instructions for the school to close unless we created safe learning spaces. Fortunately, thanks to substantial donations from UHST supporters in Greece, the United States and the UK we have been able to build new permanent classrooms and a school hall on a site next to the old school. We are left with a few more things to do before Isaac Newton Humanist Primary School meets the requirements of government education inspectors. These include:

  • Constructing a new kitchen and stoves so that children can be adequately fed.
  • Renovating girls’ and boys’ toilets to ensure dignity, privacy, and good hygiene.
  • Making desks and chairs to enable pupils to sit comfortably and focus during lessons and examinations.
  • Rainwater harvesting from our roofs to provide a reliable supply of clean water for sanitation and handwashing, thus reducing illness and absence from lessons.
  • Refurbishing our older, unsafe buildings will create secure rooms for the headteacher, bursar, for the library, computer room and other learning activity spaces.

Each improvement strengthens our mission to provide a safe, supportive, and inspiring environment for every child.
